Overfishing has depleted many of the worlds fish populations. In many cases, certain species have been driven near the point of extinction. Decreasing fish populations and reduced biodiversity is becoming a common phenomenon. Many of the aquatic environments of our planet now contain some of the most damaged, degraded and destitute habitats in the world.
Despite the fact that our Lodge is located in an area which has not been exposed to heavy recreational or commercial fishing, along with our government, we are committed to conservation practices and being part of the solution.
The government of Panama has been proactive regarding fishing conservation. In August 1997, a law was enacted that protects all billfish from being caught commercially. In fact, the International Game Fishing Association (IGFA) gave the 1999 conservation award in the country category to Panama. Panamanian President, Ernesto Perez went to Florida to personally accept this prestigious award. In hopes of encouraging some of its neighbors to get more involved in conserving this great sport, Panama hosted and co-sponsored the first Sport Fishing Economic Conference of Central America in September 1998.
The staff and guests of the Belen River Tarpon Lodge will do their part as responsible anglers by RELEASING ALL BILLFISH, with few exceptions.
